Chinese Tradition (taught in English)

This module is a general survey of the cultural tradition of China. It is aimed at giving students a deeper understanding of how the Chinese lived and worked in the traditional era, their institutions and their thinking. The "Great tradition" and the "Small tradition" of Chinese society and their relevance to the present will be examined. Topics of discussion will include early Chinese worldview, Chinese religiosity, Chinese symbolism, Chinese names, Chinese festivals and folk customs, etc. Having read this module, students would have a better appreciation of the linkage between Chinese traditions in the past and modern society.
