This module explores a wide variety of linguistic topics in the Chinese language. It covers historical phonology of Chinese, Chinese scripts, classical and modern sentence structures, the application of current linguistic theories to Chinese, dialectal studies (including topics related to Chinese dialects in Singapore and language planning), etc. For Chinese historical linguistics, this course introduces both the Chinese traditional approach (rime books, rime tables, old texts, phonogram graphs, etc.) and the Western approach (sound change, comparative method, reconstruction). This course is offered to students in the Department.
