Advanced Organic Synthesis and Spectroscopy

This module will introduce students to the uses of high-field multidimensional NMR techniques for the structure elucidation of complex naturally occurring organic molecules. Methods for the determination of absolute configuration will also be discussed. This module will also introduce students to synthetic methods of C-C bond formation with an emphasis on reactions which lead to control of stereochemistry. Topics covered include 2D and 3D NMR, MS, octant rule, exciton coupling, Horeau method; Cope and related rearrangements; organophosphorus, organosulphur and organosilicon rearrangements. The module is directed towards students majoring in chemistry and related disciplines.
