Second Language Learning

This module provides a broad overview of the major issues, theoretical approaches and research methods in second language learning. The course is designed to encourage students to make connections between theory, empirical research and their own experiences. The overall goal is to familiarise students with the field and to develop a solid, grounded understanding of the multiple factors that shape second language learning. Key topics include early childhood language learning, motivation, language and identity, language and community, second language socialization, language learning and technology, language and power, study abroad contexts, and heritage language learning.
