This course introduces social semiotics and Michael Halliday's systemic functional model of language. This model of language provides a comprehensive description of the major systems constituting the lexicogrammar of the English language. Students will analyse texts from the perspective of systemic functional theory. The course involves the extension of the systemic functional model to other semiotic resources including visual images. Students will use the facilities in the Laboratory for Research in Semiotics (LRS) so that the software Systemics1.0 may be used to learn systemic functional analysis.
