The status and legitimacy of Singlish is a hotly debated topic in Singapore society. Supporters of Singlish claim it contributes to the Singaporean identity and helps Singaporeans establish a connection with each other overseas. Detractors claim it jeopardizes Singaporeans’ ability to learn Standard English and conveys a poor image of Singapore society on the global stage. This module introduces students to the various arguments and assumptions surrounding the Singlish controversy. It provides students with the conceptual tools needed to better understand the complexity behind an issue that is often presented in simplistic and emotional terms.
