Transition and the Rule of Law in Myanmar

This subject will provide an introduction to the modern legal system of Myanmar/Burma in social, political and historical context. It will consider the legal framework and institutions of Myanmar in light of the literature on rule of law reform in transitional and developing contexts. The subject will include a focus on constitutional law; the legislature; the courts; criminal justice; minority rights; foreign investment law and special economic zones; the military; and institutional reform. The mode of assessment for this course is 80% research essay, 10% class presentation and 10% class participation.
