Tool Engineering

The module teaches students how to design cutting tools and jigs and fixtures for machining processes, which is essential knowledge for mechanical engineers. At the end, students are expected to have the fundamental knowledge of cutting tool and fixture design. Students will be able to design cutting tools and fixtures using this fundamental knowledge. The following topics will be covered: Jigs and fixtures: workholding and locating principles, clamping devices, design of jigs and fixtures for conventional and CNC machines, inspection jigs and fixtures; Design of cutting tools: nomenclature of cutting tools, optimization of tool shape, design features of single-point cutting tools, conventional drills and milling cutters, grinding processes. This is an elective module for students who major in manufacturing engineering.
