Social Change 1900 - 1950

The module looks in depth at the nature and significance of various social changes in Malay society 1900-1950. Some topics to be covered would be changes in education, economic life, urbanization, ethnic relations, westernization, religious life and administration of Islam, the changing roles of Malay rulers and traditional Malay elite, the development of Malay nationalism, the development of modern literature, the issue of tradition and change, the challenges of social reform. Module is meant for students interested in the study of social change among the Malays, as well as Southeast Asia in general.
