Ethnomethodology for New Media

Ethnomethodology is the close-grained empirical study of particular groups’ (ethnos) ways (or “methods”) of creating mutually understandable meaning-making communicative exchange and recognizable social order during the ordinary back-and-forth of everyday talk and the fine-grained choreography of everyday moment-to-moment interaction in real time. As such, the findings of over 50 years empirical investigation in this field has much to offer students who are interested in applying those findings in the effort to design ever more realistically interacting human-like robots, gameplay avatars, new media platforms and human-computer interfaces.
