Arctic Engineering

The Arctic regions have enormous economic potential as a source of energy and raw materials. Their development generates many environmental, human, and technical questions, among them frozen ground, sea ice, transport, societal impact on the existing inhabitants, and the need to give workers an acceptable quality of life. Unhappy experience shows that the Arctic environment is extremely vulnerable to damage, and slow to repair itself, and so great care has to be taken. The Arctic is a new frontier, and there are many opportunities for creative engineering.
