Topics in PT: The Enlightenment

The Enlightenment of the 18th century is commonly seen as the origin of ‘modernity’. The course deals with this perception by analysing how a breach with traditional ideas, especially religious, led to new theories of nature and its exploration, of animals and their rights, of individuality and conscience, of private and public life, of the role of women, of individual rights and the common good, of society as an object of science and control, of the contrast between European and non-European society, of race and racism, of crime and punishment, of art and aesthetics.
