History Of Sexuality In Asia

This module examines sexual behaviours, ideologies, institutions, and regulation in a variety of different contexts, from the medieval Japanese court to colonies such as British India and the Dutch East Indies. It introduces students to key concepts, texts, and historiographical and theoretical approaches used to study sexuality, and looks comparatively at historical episodes in which sexuality intersected with other categories of identity such as gender, race, and class. Although the module gives students foundational knowledge about historical sexuality in Asia it also raises questions about how to "do" the history of sexuality and explores the benefits offered by interdisciplinary methods.
