Modern Chinese Literature and Film

An introduction to the major works of twentieth-century and contemporary Chinese literature and film. Beginning with the May Fourth movement, the first half of the course explores the development of realist, romanticist, and naturalist modes of writing in pre-1949 Chinese literature. The second half of the course examines the interactions between new literary forms, experimental filmmaking, and intellectual movements in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan after 1949, paying close attention to the rise of experimental fiction, social critiques, and feminism.
