This course investigates the social divisions of cities. The course is suitable for students interested in urban studies, regardless of discipline. The topics covered in the course include: The ghetto; Race and segregation; Immigration and the city; Class, poverty, and gentrification; Gender divisions; Cultural quarters and commoditized difference. The course introduces students to different modes of analysis and methods relevant to understanding social and economic division. Divided Cities can be taken as a stand-alone elective or as part of an Urban Studies or Anthropology Major or Minor, or any other Minor or Major as agreed by the Head of Study.
